MLB Power Rankings: Despite latest surge, White Sox not catching media’s attention…yet.

by Sox On 35th Contributors

The Chicago White Sox are riding a four-game winning streak and have moved back within two games of the second wild card spot. Had it not been for the rough trip to Minnesota last week, they may have made a bigger dent in the power rankings across the nation.

As we near the end of May, let’s take a look at where our White Sox stand amongs the media…

20 (-2) The White Sox got swept by the Twins over the weekend, in somewhat predictable fashion, and they were tied 1-1 with the Royals on Memorial Day before that game had to be suspended by rain. It will be completed before Tuesday night’s regularly-scheduled tilt at Guaranteed Rate Field, with the White Sox trying to avoid a four-game losing streak. That would be their longest losing streak since they dropped five straight to the Mariners and Rays back between April 6-10. There was some momentum on the South Side of Chicago earlier this month, and Lucas Giolito continues to look like an ace-in-the-making at age 24, but the Pale Hose should probably start making a list of their best trade chips.

25 (+2) The White Sox aren’t very good, but at least they have a brighter future (should everyone pan out). One part of that future, Lucas Giolito, has been on quite a roll: The big righty has a 1.74 ERA in May, allowing just eight runs across six starts, including a shutout of the Astros on May 23.

24 (+1) The White Sox’s lineup was acceptably potent in the early going, but the past week-plus has seen a decline that in retrospect was all but inevitable. Through May 13, Chicago ranked a middling 17th with a .742 team OPS, but led the majors with a robust .320 team BABIP that, once adjusted for park and league, was among the highest of all time. Since then, that number has been a more pedestrian .295. Playing the Astros and Twins on the road might have something to do with this.

24 (+2)The White Sox have done an exceptional job of taking care of teams like the Kansas City Royals, but haven’t been able to show up agains tthe upper echelon. They will get their chance in this 4-game home stand with the Indians, along with a quick trip to Washington to take on the Nationals. If they can continue to make more strides, do they dare bring up Dylan Cease and perhaps make a call to, I don’t know….Dallas Keuchel? Just a thought….
