White Sox sign Aurora University outfielder AJ Gill to UDFA deal

by Joe Binder

It looks like the White Sox have struck a deal with another undrafted free agent. Aurora University outfielder AJ Gill announced in a tweet this afternoon that he has signed with the organization.

“I’m super excited to announce that I’ll be joining the Chicago White Sox organization. I want to thank the AU Baseball coaching staff for all the help they’ve given me in my development as a person and player,” Gill expanded in a release later issued by Aurora’s athletic department. “I also want to thank coach Chad Trudo, coach Jocelyn Ocon, and Athletic Director Jim Hamad for all of their help and guidance. To my teammates, I can’t wait to see you guys keep the culture that we’ve built and continue to succeed on and off the field.”

Gill, a senior, hit .333 with two home runs and 14 RBI in 11 games this spring. During the full 2019 season, he was just as impressive with nine doubles, five triples, 10 home runs, 52 RBI, and .337 average in 46 games. The Jacksonville, Florida native was named a 2019 All-Region (Midwest) First-Team outfielder by D3baseball.com, and an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), and Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) First-Team outfielder. He was also named a 2020 Second-Team preseason All-American by D3baseball.com.

For the White Sox, this is their fifth known undrafted free agent signing over the past few weeks. Gill joins a list that features left-handed pitcher Ty Madrigal, right-handed pitcher Brandon Jenkins, infielder Brandon Bossard, and outfielder Duke Ellis. Again, the organization can sign as many non-drafted players as they’d like to a contract worth up to $20,000.
