Prior to Saturday night’s game vs. Arizona, the White Sox announced the following four roster moves:
- Placed RHP Lance Lynn on the Bereavement List;
- Placed 3B Yoan Moncada on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to August 26) with a strained left hamstring;
- Returned INF/OF Leury Garcia from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte and reinstated him from the 10-day injured list (lower back strain);
- Recalled RHP Davis Martin from Charlotte. He is scheduled to start this evening’s game.
Moncada, 27, made a strong defensive play early in Thursday’s contest but came up limping afterward. He managed to remain in the game for several innings until he was eventually replaced in the lineup by Romy Gonzalez. Unfortunately, Moncada is no stranger to lower-body injuries, which made this IL-stint a strong likelihood despite the team’s recent optimism.
Though coming up clutch several times as of late, Moncada has struggled offensively overall this season. The former top prospect is hitting an abysmal .197/.269/.313 (58-for-294) with 7 home runs, 40 RBI, and .581 OPS over 80 games. During his absence, we will likely see Garcia fill in and potentially Josh Harrison if Romy Gonzalez slides over to second base.
Speaking of Garcia, the utility man is coming off a lower back strain that affected his performance for weeks up until his IL stint. The 31-year-old began his rehab assignment last night with Charlotte, going 1-for-4 as the designated hitter. Garcia is hitting .212/.238/.275 (58-273) with eight doubles, three home runs, 19 RBI, and 35 runs scored in 83 games this season, his 10th with the Sox. He is in the first year of a three-year, $16.5M deal that he signed this past offseason.
Lynn, 35, is 3-5 with a 5.00 ERA (43 ER/77.1 IP) and 83 strikeouts over 14 starts this season, his second with the White Sox. Over five starts in August, he has gone 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA (9 ER/29.2 IP), three walks, and 34 strikeouts. Lynn must remain on the Bereavement List for a minimum of three days and no more than seven. It’s unclear how long he will be away, so it remains to be seen if he misses more than one start.
Martin, 25, will start tonight’s game vs. the Diamondbacks. He has made eight appearances (four starts) over seven stints with the White Sox this season, going 2-3 with a 4.25 ERA (17 ER/36.0 IP) and 26 strikeouts.
Martin won his last start in Game 2 of a doubleheader on August 9 at Kansas City, allowing one run on three hits over 5.2 IP. He is 5-5 with a 5.08 ERA (36 ER/72.2 IP) and 95 strikeouts in 16 starts this season between Charlotte and Class AA Birmingham.

A Jake Burger promotion from AAA Charlotte is Rick Hahn’s call. It probably would have happened to infuse more offense into the White Sox lineup but Burger is currently on the AAA IL. What else is new? Burger has had his own share of devastating injuries, enough to last a full career. It’s not just the MLB roster that has been hit with bad luck health wise. This organization has suffered injuries at every level including the recent season ending one to top SS prospect Jose Rodriguez at AA Birmingham.
What the F does TLR have against Jae Burger? They need run production and then let this guy sit in AAA, even with Monada now going on this. pure BS politics this team can not afford.
All White Sox fans should qualify for the Bereavement List in 2022.
How about after placing one on the IL and reinstating the other, this winter we place both of these useless hitters with other teams altogether. Moncada has been a bust for all but one of the several years he’s been with the team. Garcia wouldn’t know what to do with a bat if the ball were placed on a tee. And these are just two of the literally ten or more I’d jettison off this team after October. When they’ll all be home golfing anyway…
