The White Sox clubhouse will see a new face Friday for the beginning of their six-game home stand.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Tommy Pham’s contract was selected from Triple-A Charlotte. In a corresponding move, Kevin Pillar was designated for assignment.
Pham was signed to a minor league contract 12 days ago and had a clause in his contract that necessitated a pretty quick turnaround time to bring him to the majors. As a result, he saw only four games in Charlotte before the White Sox decided to call him up. Across 18 plate appearances in those games, he hit .294/.333/.353.
The experienced 36-year-old will now play for his seventh major league team after stints with the Cardinals, Rays, Padres, Reds, Red Sox, Mets, and Diamondbacks. Last season between the Mets and Diamondbacks, he slashed .256/.328/.446 across 481 plate appearances.
While the move denies young players like Oscar Colas a chance for more major league at-bats, the White Sox are desperate for any decent contribution to their anemic offense. One of those past contributors was the man DFA’d – Kevin Pillar – who faced his share of struggles in 17 games for the White Sox this season, only managing a .160 batting average.
