According to a press release, the White Sox have acquired minor-league right-handed pitchers Aldrín Batista and Máximo Martínez from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for international slot money. It’s not clear just how much slot money was sent in the trade, though our lead MiLB contributor Michael Suareo says the Sox have just under $1.5 million available in their pool.
Batista, 20, is 3-1 with a 3.46 ERA (15 ER/39.0 IP) and a 12.5 K/9.0 IP ratio in 10 games with the Arizona Complex League Dodgers this season. He currently leads the ACL in strikeouts, ranks second in ERA and WHIP (1.23), fourth in opponents average (.237), and eighth in innings pitched as seven of his 10 appearances have been starts.
Batista, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound native of Azúa, Dominican Republic, originally was signed by the Dodgers as an international free agent on July 5, 2021. He previously pitched for the organization’s DOSL team in 2022, going 1-1 with a 1.55 ERA and 1.205 WHIP over 13 games (11 starts).
Martinez, 19, is 0-0 with a 4.73 ERA (14 ER/26.2 IP) and 28 strikeouts over nine games this season with the ACL Dodgers. He’s allowed one earned run or less over 3.0-plus IP in six of his nine outings. Though he possesses decent stuff, Martinez will likely need to cut down on his 14.2 percent walk rate in order to remain a starting pitcher.
Martinez, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound native of Caracas, Venezuela, originally was signed by the Dodgers as an international free agent on January 15, 2021. FanGraphs previously had him ranked 31st in the Dodgers farm system in their early January prospect report.
