Spring Training Report: Rodon Solid, Lopez Struggles in White Sox’s 4-4 Tie

by Jordan Lazowski

Carlos Rodon continued his excellent Spring this afternoon, throwing four scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Reynaldo Lopez was not nearly as effective, but the White Sox’ offense mounted a late rally to force a 4-4 tie with the Diamondbacks. With the tie, the White Sox moved to 6-10-5 on the Spring.

Position Players

Many hitters you might’ve seen for the last time in Spring Training made up the offense today, as Adam Eaton, Nick Madrigal, and Andrew Vaughn were the only regulars in the lineup. While the offense struggled early, they mounted a ninth inning rally, capped off by a Matt Reynolds game-tying RBI double. Outside of the ninth inning, the biggest headline was Andrew Vaughn’s triple off the RF wall.

Pitchers

Overall, it was a decent day for White Sox pitching. Carlos Rodon threw four scoreless innings, and Garrett Crochet and Felipe Paulino threw scoreless innings of their own. Reynaldo Lopez, however, continued to have a pretty rough Spring, giving up 4 runs in three innings.

Rodon continues to be interesting – his fastball sat 94-96 mph today with improved spin as compared to years’ past. He’s the clear front-runner for the fifth spot in the rotation, and he’s making a strong case to dispel the thoughts of Carlos Rodon of old.
