White Sox outfielder Adam Engel to miss a couple weeks with strained hamstring

by Joe Binder

The White Sox’s roster depth has taken a couple blows lately as we speed towards Opening Day.

It first began with Friday’s announcement that reliever Jimmy Cordero underwent successful Tommy John surgery. Though he didn’t figure to start the season on the Major League roster, Cordero would’ve likely been one of the first arms called upon should reinforcements been needed. Jump ahead a day and it was the scorching hot Adam Engel who was next to get hit with the injury bug.

In Saturday’s game, Engel was forced to exit after straining his right hamstring when making an awkward throw home on a sacrifice fly. Though he walked off the field under his own power, we learned today from manager Tony La Russa that the outfielder will miss “at least a couple of weeks.”

In 36 at-bats across 14 games this spring, Engel was slashing .278/.278/.667 with three home runs, two triples, a double, and seven RBI. The bulk of this offense came over the past few days too, making him an emerging storyline as he captured the team lead in several offensive categories.

The White Sox will need to shift gears and likely rely on utility man Leury Garcia to assume any outfield duties for the time being. It’s also worth noting the club recently brought in veteran Billy Hamilton for depth purposes, so he could be another option if he’s able to earn a roster spot over the next week or so.
