One of the better White Sox pitchers from last season will be returning to the team.
According to FanSided’s Robert Murray, the White Sox have signed RHP Mike Clevinger to a one-year deal. The deal has not been made official by the club yet, but it is expected the deal will be about $2.5-$3.5M.
According to Murray, after trading Dylan Cease to the San Diego Padres, the White Sox checked back in on Clevinger. The two sides have been in contact since the trade.
Clevinger, 33, is coming off a season where he posted a 3.77 ERA in 131.1 innings with the South Siders. After June 1 when he recovered from a biceps injury, he posted a 3.32 ERA. According to Murray, he also was one of nine starting pitchers in baseball who averaged 94 mph on his fastball and averaged less than two walks per nine innings, with Sandy Alcantara, Alex Cobb, Gerrit Cole, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Pablo Lopez, Tarik Skubal and Zack Wheeler being the others.
With Chris Flexen struggling in his outing today against the Braves and the team not yet announcing a starter for Wednesday’s series finale, this move signals that new-GM Chris Getz might be concerned about his starting pitching depth. It is unclear how this move affects Nick Nastrini, who was expected to be the team’s fifth starter once a spot was needed.
