White Sox Update: Injury Report, Giolito/Donaldson Go Back-and-Forth

by Jordan Lazowski

Another day, another flurry of injury reports for the White Sox. Once again: some good news, some bad news. Let’s review:

  • Aaron Bummer (Hamstring) and Evan Marshall (Right Flexor Strain) heading to 10-Day IL
  • Michael Kopech and Jace Fry have been recalled to the White Sox following their injury stints

Like we said: some good news, some bad news.

The good news is that the White Sox get Michael Kopech back, someone who they missed dearly. Kopech has thrown 31.1 innings this season with a 1.72 ERA, 36% strikeout rate, 8.8% walk rate, and has accumulated 1.0 fWAR. His multi-inning relief appearances have been sorely missed as Garrett Crochet has experienced some rookie-type struggles. He will add some stability to the White Sox bullpen and likely steps back into a high-leverage relief role to help bridge the gap between the starters and Liam Hendriks.

Jace Fry will be a fresh arm in the pen as well. He’s thrown 14 innings in AAA Charlotte this year with a 1.93 ERA, 36.8% strikeout rate, 14.0% walk rate, and a 2.53 FIP. With Aaron Bummer going on the IL, Fry will be a necessary left-handed arm out of the bullpen.

With both Aaron Bummer and Evan Marshall, the White Sox lose typically solid back-of-the-bullpen arms that have seen their struggles this year. While both could likely use some time off to regroup and get things right, it appears that only Bummer might be around anytime soon – according to Tony La Russa.

Hopefully, the injury bug stops biting the White Sox sometime soon.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for some fun, take a look at the continuation of the Lucas Giolito/Josh Donaldson back-and-forth from last night.

In case you missed it, Giolito took exception to Donaldson’s antics after he hit a home run:

… and he let the press know about it too:

Today? Donaldson fired back – and even got Ozzie involved:
