White Sox Update: Gonzalez, Lopez, Giolito, Final Series vs. Cubs, Live BP

We’ve reached day five of Summer Camp, which is rolling right along without any major issues. In a little bit of a change, reporters were able to attend the afternoon workout group instead of the morning, so we got a glimpse of some other guys on social media. Here’s the latest news, notes, tweets, and quotes from Tuesday at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Gonzalez shares health status; this season’s goal

As you might recall, White Sox lefty Gio Gonzalez suffered some minor shoulder discomfort back in February at the start of Spring Training. Luckily, the proactiveness of all parties and treatment has kept this from becoming a larger issue for the pitcher. He shared in a press conference this morning that he’s feeling better now than he was a few months ago.

The southpaw also touched on the chance for him to finally throw a pitch for the team.

Originally selected by the organization in the first-round of the 2004 Major League draft, Gonzalez was later traded to Philly as part of the Thome deal in 2005. He then came back in the Gavin Floyd for Freddy Garcia exchange in 2006, before later heading to Oakland in the Nick Swisher acquisition a little over a year later. Gonzalez has split time between the Nationals, Brewers, and Yankees over the course of his career before finally coming back on a one-year deal this offseason. All signs point to him making his long-awaited White Sox debut in the coming weeks.

If you have a subscription to The Athletic, reporter James Fegan wrote more in detail on Gonzalez’s past and his chance to finally throw for the team that selected him.

Lopez looks for better mindset in 2020

Reynaldo Lopez shared that following a rough 2019 season, he met with a sports psychologist in an effort to bring a new mindset with him to the mound this season.

‘‘Sometimes as players we are struggling on thoughts, especially nervous thoughts when something goes wrong. And for players, that’s one of the bigger challenges: Get over it, keep moving forward. It’s not always easy.’’

Giolito joins Chicago athletes in helping community

Lucas Giolito joined a group of athletes from teams like the Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, Cubs, Packers, Panthers, and Saints in helping the Chicago community.

The White Sox ace and the rest of the group, led by NFL linebacker Sam Acho, met with community members and discussed ways to better improve the area. They also took photos at the site of a liquor store on Chicago’s west side that was purchased and will be turned into a food mart. A great show of unity by representatives from all of the city’s major sports franchises and beyond!
