The White Sox are moving on from one of their top prospects.
In a Friday night press release, the team announced that infielder Jose Rodriguez has been traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for cash considerations. The deal comes just one day after he was designated for assignment to make room for starting pitcher Mike Clevinger.
Rodriguez, who was as ranked the organization’s 17th overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline, made his MLB debut in 2023. Although never recorded an official at-bat, the 22-year-old was used as a pinch runner and a defensive replacement, scoring one run during his brief stint on the roster. He spent the rest of the 2023 season split between Double-A and Triple-A, where he had a cumulative slash line of .262/.292/.437 and a wRC+ of 87.
While the move to designate Rodriguez for assignment was a bit surprising, there is still plenty of potential with the 22-year-old middle infielder. Rodriguez offers defensive versatility with the ability to play both second base and shortstop. Along with that, he has always been a threat on the basepaths, swiping over 100 bases between the 2021-2023 seasons.
With his recent experience in Triple-A and having already made his MLB debut, it makes sense for a team like Philadelphia to add him to their depth.
