White Sox send Hanser Alberto to the IL

by Joe Binder

The White Sox can’t seem to avoid the injury bug.

Prior to Sunday’s game, the team announced that infielder Hanser Alberto has been placed on the 10-day IL with a strained left quad. As part of the corresponding move, outfielder Adam Haseley has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte, and utilityman Nick Solak has also been designated for assignment.

Alberto, 30, hasn’t provided much in the way of positives for the White Sox. A number of costly errors during the Minnesota series along with a stagnant bat have put his roster spot in jeopardy lately, especially with Jake Burger’s recent hot stretch. During the eight games he’s appeared, Alberto slashed just .211/.211/.368 (4-for-19) with one homer and four driven in.

As for Haseley, the 27-year-old will be making his second MLB appearance since joining the organization last season. During his first stint, Haseley went .238/.333/.238 with a pair driven in over 14 games. His lasting impression wasn’t necessarily a good one, however, as he collided with Danny Mendick in a collision that effectively ended the infielder’s season.

After a hot start in Charlotte this season, Haseley has cooled off to the tune of just .229/.339/.438 (11-for-48) with two homers and four RBI. We’ve already seen Pedro Grifol use Gavin Sheets a few times in the outfield, so it’s hard to say whether or not this trend will continue. Haseley’s defense would undoubtedly work in his favor and pitching matchups wouldn’t seem to hurt either. We’ll await further word on the plan of action as that will determine various players’ roles moving forward.

Solak, 28, was claimed off waivers from Seattle on Friday and didn’t get much of a chance at all.

Is Yolmer Sanchez available? Gordon Beckham is in the studio? Can Ozzie be a player/manager? Josh Harrison is on Hahn’s phone contacts . I’m sure they can reacquire Adam Engel. Haven’t we seen this injury scenario before? The WSox have tremendous team depth…at DH
