White Sox claim infielder Nick Solak from Seattle Mariners

by Jordan Lazowski

The White Sox have added to their infield depth once again.

Among several roster moves this afternoon, the club announced that they have claimed IF/OF Nick Solak from the Seattle Mariners. Solak has been assigned to Triple-A Charlotte.

Solak, 28, has had a rough go of things over the past several seasons. A second-round draft pick of the Yankees in 2016, Solak quickly rose through the Yankees’ system before being traded to the Rays as part of a three-team trade that included the Diamondbacks. After two more solid minor league seasons with Rays, he was traded to the Rangers in 2019 for RHP Pete Fairbanks. He made his major league debut with Texas in 2019.

It was a strong showing for Solak in Texas that season, and in 135 plate appearances, he slashed .293/.393/.491 and hit five home runs. However, it’s been a slow descent since then, and in just 35 games last season, Solak slashed .209/.309/.329. He did not make the Mariners’ roster out of Spring Training and has really struggled in AAA to start this season.

A Chicago native, Solak will be looking to re-capture some of his early career and minor league success with the White Sox. Certainly no stranger to needing infield help, the versatile Solak will look to earn some sort of spot with the team if he is able to figure out what has gone wrong over his past few seasons. If he can do that, he certainly does have the potential to make an impact. Until then, however, look for Solak to be a depth piece further down in the pecking order.
