White Sox place Leury Garcia on 10-day IL

by Jordan Lazowski

The injuries keep piling up for the White Sox infielders.

Prior to tonight’s game, the team officially placed infielder/outfielder Leury Garcia on the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain. As part of the corresponding move, they recalled infielder Romy Gonzalez from Triple-A Charlotte.

Garcia, 31, has been playing through the back pain for at least a few weeks now, as it’s been apparent in his at-bats that he hasn’t exactly been feeling great. Garcia is hitting just .212/.238/.275 on the season over the course of 288 plate appearances, and he is in the first year of a three-year, $16.5M deal that he signed last offseason.

In his absence, White Sox fans will see a lot of Lenyn Sosa and Romy Gonzalez. Gonzalez, 25, has spent time with the big league club before, as he hit .250/.273/.344 in limited action last season. He has spent a lot of his 2022 season battling injuries but has hit .232/.312/.442 in 154 plate appearances in AAA this season. He hasn’t been hitting too well as of late, however, as in his last six games with Charlotte in August, he’s hit just .120/.120/.280 in 25 plate appearances.

With the White Sox now relying on two rookies to man the shortstop position during a playoff push, it might make sense for the White Sox to pursue the recently released Elvis Andrus. You can read more about Andrus and how he would fit with the club here.

Gonzalez will play shortstop and bat ninth tonight as the White Sox take on the Astros.
