White Sox place Joe Kelly on IL with right groin strain

by Tommy Gross

Before the series opener against the Twins, the White Sox placed right-handed reliever Joe Kelly on the 15-day injured list with a right groin strain. As part of the corresponding move, they have selected the contract of righty Keynan Middleton and placed him on the active roster, while outrighting Jonathan Stiever to Triple-A Charlotte.

It is unclear when Joe Kelly hurt his groin, but it can be assumed that this occurred sometime during his relief appearance against the Pirates on Saturday. The 35-year-old is in his second season with the White Sox and currently holds a 10.13 ERA over 2.2 IP this season. He has given up four hits and one walk as well as three strikeouts in the three games he has appeared.

Middleton, 29, originally signed to a minor league contract on January 15. He has previously played for the Los Angles Angels, the Seattle Mariners, and most recently, the Arizona Diamondbacks. With th Diamondbacks, he went 1-2 in 17.0 IP with a 5.29 ERA. In those 17 innings, he registered 15 strikeouts and three walks while giving up 10 ER on 16 hits.

In Charlotte so far, he has three appearances pitching 3.0 IP with three strikeouts, two walks, and one hit allowed. He, additionally, has a save in one of these appearances.

Middleton figures to be used in low-leverage situations for the White Sox until Kelly comes back from injury.
