White Sox, Jim Thome Reportedly Met with Bryce Harper on November 19th

by Joe Binder

Some interesting news surrounding the Chicago White Sox and Bryce Harper has been leaked over the past 24 hours or so. On Monday night, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports wrote that the White Sox sent a contingent that included Hall of Famer Jim Thome to Las Vegas to meet with superstar free agent Bryce Harper. Here is the excerpt from his article:

The White Sox, for example, enlisted the help of longtime star and Hall of Famer Jim Thome during their visit to Las Vegas, league sources told Yahoo Sports. They needed to pull out all the stops, with Phillies ownership admitting the potential to spend “stupid” amounts of money this offseason and others recognizing the impact of an in-his-prime power hitter.”

Earlier Tuesday afternoon, additional information came out about the meeting. Bruce Levin of 670 The Score reported that the White Sox’s meeting with Harper took place on November 19th. According to Levin, the topics the White Sox pitched to Harper included the highly talented farm system, young talent that is already at the Major League level, and the financial benefits of endorsement opportunities in Chicago.

The White Sox are just one of roughly a dozen teams that are said to have already reached out to Harper thus far. However, the Sox are still deemed to be one of the most serious teams along with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, and New York Yankees. While it is likely still a long shot that the Sox sign him, it appears that they are ready to offer him a significant deal.

Heading into the Winter Meetings next week, White Sox fans should be ready to see additional rumors and possibly several roster moves take place. The details of the said Bryce Harper meeting is definitely a sign that the organization is ready to turn the corner in this rebuild and start to bring in proven talent to accompany the rising stars within the farm system.

The 2018 Winter Meetings will begin this Sunday, December 9th to Thursday, December 13th at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Our very own Matt McAley will be in attendance and provide updates on our social media accounts @SoxOn35th.
