White Sox 3, Phillies 0: Giolito dazzles in doubleheader split

by Jordan Lazowski

The White Sox needed to at least grab one win today – and that they did this evening.

After dropping this afternoon’s game 7-4, Lucas Giolito came to the mound in hopes of righting the ship for the White Sox. He did that and then some, throwing six scoreless and hitless innings for the South Siders before being lifted after throwing 102 pitches. Kendall Graveman would follow with a 1-2-3 seventh, but in the eighth, the Phillies would get their only hit of the night: a leadoff double off the bat of Brandon Marsh off of Aaron Bummer. Bummer would get the next two hitters before turning the ball over to Reynaldo Lopez for the four-out save. In more positive news: the White Sox only walked one hitter tonight, and it was a Lucas Giolito walk in the first inning of this one.

The offense didn’t do much in the nightcap, and in fact, all of their offense came on a Jake Burger swing in the first inning. His three-run homer tied him for the team lead in long balls, and outside of his hit, the White Sox could only manage two more of their own throughout the night. So, the offense needed a start like Giolito’s tonight, and now they have a chance to win their first series win of the season once again.

With the victory, the White Sox improved to 7-11 on what is still a young season.

W: Lucas Giolito (1-1) | L: Bailey Falter (0-3) | S: Reynaldo Lopez (3)

Notable Performances

Lucas Giolito: 6 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K

Lucas Giolito was brilliant tonight, and while he mentioned he felt mechanically out of sync at times today, he also mentioned that he has felt much different in his past two starts. Hopefully Giolito can continue to build on these positive performances.

Jake Burger: 1-for-2, HR, 3 RBI, R, BB

Jake Burger continues to provide an offensive spark for the White Sox, and he’s doing everything he possibly can to prove that he belongs at the major league level once this team begins to get healthier again.
