The White Sox got some positive news as a result of Tim Anderson’s follow-up with doctors today, and it’s clear the team could see Anderson’s return to the field very soon.
Per Rick Hahn, Tim Anderson was cleared to begin ramping up baseball activity and would be doing so immediately. The White Sox have not committed to a return date for Anderson, but Hahn mentioned next week’s homestand (beginning Tuesday, September 20th, versus Cleveland) as a potential return date.
Anderson, this year’s AL starting shortstop at the All-Star Game, is hitting .301/.339/.395 with six home runs and 13 stolen bases. For the past two months, however, Anderson has been far from an All-Star player. Since June 20 – when he returned from his groin injury – the shortstop has been hitting .249/.287/.290 with just one home run. The White Sox will be hoping the All-Star version of TA returns once he returns to the lineup.
In Anderson’s absence, Elvis Andrus and Romy Gonzalez have been playing admirably, leading many White Sox fans to wonder what the best course of action is for the team once Anderson returns.
In addition to providing an update on Tim Anderson, Rick Hahn also announced that Tony La Russa will be at the ballpark for the next two days, but will not be in the dugout. Doctors have still not cleared him to manage, and there is also no determination on whether or not he will return this season.
La Russa is in the second year of a three-year contract with the team, and by all accounts, the team is expecting him to return next season if the club makes the playoffs. However, it has previously been reported that La Russa could be “reassigned” within the organization should the club miss the postseason. It remains to be seen how this situation affects his long-term health and ability to manage, and Hahn has mentioned that it is too soon to look that far ahead.
