The Finale: White Sox 5, Tigers 3

by Jordan Lazowski

The White Sox concluded their season on top today, using timely offense and a solid start from Ross Detwiler to mow down the Tigers. With the win, the White Sox avoided losing 90 games for the first time since 2016 and – in most fans’ opinions – brought the death of the rebuild.

Stats on 35th: Let’s Break this one down By the Numbers

Today’s Numbers:

21.1/-11.1, 2, 4, 179, 1028

21.1/-11.1

Today’s MVP and LVP, in terms of Win Probability Added (WPA) are Jose Abreu (21.1%) and Zack Collins (-11.1%). Jose Abreu was hit twice in his first two at-bats, then hit a crucial double in his third at-bat to put two runners in scoring position that would eventually score as the tying and go-ahead runs in this game. Collins, on the other hand, went 0-for-3 with a couple of strikeouts.

For the first time since 1960, the White Sox had two hitters in the top three batting average leaders in the majors leagues. Tim Anderson obviously let the AL, while Yoan Moncada finished third. Here’s Chris Kamka with the rest of this stat:

4

The White Sox won this game with a lot of timely hitting: the offense put up five runs on just four hits all game. However, three of these four hits went for extra bases, as the White Sox made their hits count.

179

Today is the end of the White Sox season. Hopefully this is the last time that we say that in September for awhile. Until then, only 179 days until March 26th – the day the White Sox start their 2020 campaign. Be ready for a cold one.

1028

The rebuild started on December 6, 2016, with the trade of Chris Sale to the Red Sox. Today, 1028 days later on September 29, 2019, the rebuild was declared dead. After several years of suffering, better times are soon around the corner. Here’s to competitive baseball in 2020 – let’s see what the White Sox can do this offseason.
