Tale of the Tape: White Sox 7, Tigers 4

by Jordan Lazowski

Lucas Giolito didn’t have his best command, but he was good enough to get through six innings of quality baseball. The offense scattered 14 hits across the diamond, and Jimmy Cordero, Jace Fry, and Alex Colome finished off the White Sox’ 49th win of the season.

W: Lucas Giolito (12-5) | L: Gregory Soto (0-5) | S: Alex Colome (22)

The Good

Lucas Giolito: 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 8 K, 18 Swinging Strikes

White Sox’ 7-9 Hitters (Anderson, McCann, Sanchez): 7-14, 5 R, 2 RBI

The Bad

Eloy Jimenez: 1-4, 1 BB, 2 K, 6 LOB

Leury Garcia: 1-5, 2 K, 4 LOB

Moment of the Game

A trio of J’s give the White Sox much needed insurance in the 8th. It’s nice to see Jose Abreu hopefully turning the corner.

Stats On 35th – Let’s Break this One Down by the Numbers

Today’s Numbers:

16.5/-12.2, 17, 158, 11, 67

16.5/-12.2

Today’s MVP and LVP, in terms of Win Probability Added (WPA) are James McCann and Eloy Jimenez. McCann added 16.5 percentage points to the Sox’ probability of winning today, going 2-for-4 with a crucial RBI single to push the lead to two runs in the eighth. Eloy Jimenez, on the other hand, subtracted 12.2 percentage points from the Sox’ probability of winning, going 1-4 with two strikeouts, leaving six runners on base in the process. Today’s WPA runner-up was reliever Jimmy Cordero, who struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning.

17

After scoring 22 runs in 11 games, the White Sox have now scored 17 runs in their previous two games. The offense has overcome Moncada’s recent injury, and only stands to improve once Eloy Jimenez begins to get comfortable once again as he returns from his IL stint.

158

Last season, Lucas Giolito had 125 strikeouts on the season. Through just 130.2 IP and 22 starts this season, Giolito has 158 strikeouts. Giolito continues to write himself a storybook season that all struggling pitchers would love to read.

67

Giolito didn’t have his slider tonight, throwing the pitch just 12 times in 107 pitches. However, his change-up more than made up for his slider, registering 12 of his 18 swinging strikes (67%). In game adjustments – with the help of James McCann- continue to be a sign of maturity for Giolito this season, and have played a large role in his success.

11

Through 313 at-bats this season, Tim Anderson has drawn just eight walks. The hot-hitting Ryan Goins has already surpassed this total in just 67 plate appearances, drawing 11 walks thus far. Could his veteran versatility, combined with Danny Mendick’s excellent campaign, mean an end to Yolmer Sanchez’s South Side career in 2020?
