With the start of the White Sox regular season postponed due to coronavirus concerns, NBC Sports Chicago has decided to re-air 70 victories from the 2005 season from now until June. Here at Sox On 35th, we will also be following along and recapping those games for you in our Tale of the Tape series.

It took 13 innings and nearly four hours, but the White Sox were able to pull out a tight victory over Detroit by a score of 4-3. Starter Brandon McCarthy twirled a quality start, giving up three earned runs over 6.1 innings. Paul Konerko launched his 19th homer of the season, and Frank Thomas also went deep for the 8th time. The White Sox improved to 52-24 on the season after the victory.

Moment of the Game
Frank Thomas launched a go-ahead home run in the 13th inning off Tigers right-hander Fernando Rodney. Thomas had gone 0-for-5 to that point and broke out in a big way for the White Sox, giving Shingo Takatsu his first win of 2005.

The number of Major League innings that Brandon McCarthy had thrown prior to this outing at Comerica Park was 15. The youngster had made his debut earlier in the year and would end up making 10 starts for the White Sox in ’05, finishing with a productive 4.03 ERA.

The White Sox divisional lead, in games, at the conclusion of this contest grew to 10. The hot start for the South Siders had paid off, as they were the only team with a double-digit lead over their division at this point in the season.

Frank Thomas’ 13th inning homer was the 444th of his career, all with the White Sox at that point. He would only hit four more in a White Sox uniform, and would play for Oakland and Toronto before retiring with 521 career homers.
