The White Sox could be making a splash in the international market, though the rumored deal is still years away.
According to MLB insider Francys Romero, the team is expected to sign Dominican shortstop prospect Braston Basker for a $6 million bonus as early as January 15, 2030. Per Romero’s post on X, Basker was previously tied to the Yankees, but the pre-agreement fell through several weeks ago.
Basker, who is just 12 years old, caught the attention of several Major League teams after videos surfaced of his extraordinary power. Standing at 5-foot-7, the 140-pound shortstop has already been described as a five-tool talent. If the rumored $6 million price tag is true, then Basker would set a new signing record.
Obviously, there is still a lot of time betweeen now and 2030. Basker has a lot of development to go through and as Romero mentioned in a follow-up post, these pre-agreements are not definitive. It’s also possible that the international signing system could shift to a draft format in the future. For now, though, the White Sox are in a prime position to land an impact talent if all goes according to plan.

I’ll believe it when they officially announce it. A lot can happen. And the kid is only 12.
