The White Sox have one of the best available starting pitchers leading up to this year’s trade deadline and it shows.

MLB insider Jon Morosi reports that the Arizona Diamondbacks are the latest team to inquire about right-hander Lucas Giolito, according to his sources. They now join their divisional rival Los Angeles Dodgers among others in pursuing the starter.

Given historical trends, it’s likely that the best prospect the White Sox would receive in any Giolito trade would be at the back end of any top-100 prospect list. As it stands right now, the Diamondbacks only have Jordan Lawlar (No. 5), Druw Jones (No. 13), and Brandon Pfaadt (No. 21) on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 ranking, making all of them highly unlikely to be involved in any proposal for Giolito straight-up. Remember, at the end of the day, teams are only trading for eight starts so unless the Sox package him with someone else, the return is likely going to be limited.

The White Sox do have leverage here with this move, as they can hold out until August 1st to receive the best offer they possibly can in a market with few starting pitchers. Netting back a top-100 prospect for Giolito would help the organization turn things back around and kickstart a retool.

On the season, Giolito is 6-6 with a 3.96 ERA in 116.0 innings. The 28-year-old has firmly put his brutal 2022 behind him as an outlier and has been the team’s most consistent starting pitcher this season.

If Giolito can go to the Diamondbacks, at least he will escape the snake-pit known as the Chicago White Sox! He will be with a contender, which is what he deserves!
