Postgame Report: White Sox 9, Royals 2

A massive seventh inning propelled the White Sox to a 9-2 victory in Kansas City, which sealed a three-game sweep of the Royals. A four-hit day from Nick Madrigal spearheaded what was an otherwise balanced effort from the Chicago offense. The White Sox improve to 5-4, while the Royals drop to 3-7.

Notable Performances

Dylan Cease: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K

Dylan Cease enjoyed his first quality start of the 2020 season, which was a welcome sight given his struggles earlier this week in Cleveland. While he still had some slight command issues, Cease hit the strike zone more consistently with a fastball that hit 99 miles-per-hour. He used such velocity to work out of some tough situations with key double plays and strikeouts.

Nick Madrigal: 4-for-5, RBI

Nick Madrigal broke through and registered his first hits of his career. All were singles, and his third jump-started the decisive seventh inning, in which the team plated seven runs.

Yasmani Grandal: 3-for-4, 3 RBI, BB

Yasmani Grandal continued to crush the ball, and he was rewarded with a three-hit day to go along with a walk. All four of his batted balls qualified as “hard-hit” (>95 miles-per-hour).

Yermin Mercedes: 0-for-1

While he did not have a real impact on the game, it is quite notable that Yermin Mercedes made his big league debut after spending nine years in the minors.

Moment of the Game

With Nomar Mazara close to returning, Nicky Delmonico’s days as a regular starter for the White Sox may be numbered. Yet, it was Delmonico who broke the game open with a clutch single in the seventh inning. For that, he deserves some recognition.

Player of the Game

There is no need to put out a poll today, as Nick Madrigal’s four-hit effort is more than enough to automatically clinch player of the game honors.

Looking Ahead

The White Sox head to Milwaukee to play two games against the Brewers tomorrow and Tuesday. The two teams will complete their season series by playing two games in Chicago on Wednesday and Thursday. First pitch tomorrow is at 7:10 PM CT. Carlos Rodon will start for the White Sox against the Brewers’ Brett Anderson.
