Postgame Report: White Sox 8, Cubs 6

by Jordan Lazowski

The Crosstown Classic never fails to provide a story.

This game was a crosstown pitchers’ duel through seven innings, as Lance Lynn and Kyle Hendricks dueled to a 2-1 score heading into the eighth. 18 outs and 12 runs later, the White Sox found themselves up 8-6 when it was all said and done.

The White Sox scored early thanks to RBI singles from Andrew Vaughn and Seby Zavala in the fourth. No scoring occurred until the seventh when Michael Kopech allowed an inherited runner to score to make the score 2-1. After a Cesar Hernandez homer to make it 4-1, Craig Kimbrel allowed a three-run homer to Andrew Romine in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at four. In the tenth, Brian Goodwin was the hero once again, lifting a two-run homer to give the White Sox a 6-4 lead that they would not give back.

With the win, the White Sox improved to 64-46 on the season and will remain 9.5 games up on the Indians.

W: Liam Hendriks (6-2) | L: Manuel Rodriguez (0-2)

Savant Leaders

Notable Performances

Lance Lynn: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 7 Swinging Strikes

Lance Lynn was awesome today, working 6+ inning and keeping the White Sox in the game throughout the afternoon. Though he was hitless at the plate, the big right-hander’s ERA sits at 2.04 after another great effort.

Cesar Hernandez: 1-for-3, HR, 2 BB, K

Cesar Hernandez continues the tear he’s been on since coming to the South Side. The switch hitter added his 19th homer on the season today in the eighth inning, stretching the lead at the time to 4-1.

Brian Goodwin: 1-for-2, HR, 2 RBI, R

Brian Goodwin did not start this game – rather, he came in as a pinch-runner for Eloy Jimenez in the 6th. He made his presence felt in extra innings, homering to LF to give the White Sox a lead. Goodwin has been a big piece of the White Sox offense recently, and this homer was incredibly important in helping the White Sox halt their mini-skid.

Liam Hendriks: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

After Craig Kimbrel struggled in his return to Wrigley Field, Liam Hendriks kicked things into another gear, cleaning up for Kimbrel in the eighth and retiring the Cubs 1-2-3 in the ninth. Hendriks struck out all four hitters he faced in the effort.

Jose Abreu: 2-for-5, 2 R
Eloy Jimenez: 1-for-3, 2B
