Postgame Report: Mariners 8, White Sox 4

After taking a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the 6th inning on the strength of Zack Collins and Danny Mendick, the White Sox allowed 7 runs on a series of walks, singles, and a 3-run double, and ended up losing the game 8-4. For whatever reason, Matt Foster was left out to throw 34 pitches and allow 5 runs on 5 hits and a walk, and the White Sox were never able to counter on offense. Aaron Bummer and Liam Hendriks each delivered shutdown innings after the Mariners had the lead. With the loss, the Sox fell to 3-4 and will begin their Opening Day journey at home tomorrow.

W: Will Vest (1-0) | L: Matt Foster (0-1)

Savant Leaders

Notable Performances

Jake Lamb: 0-for-2, 3 BB

In his White Sox debut, Jake Lamb walked three times. He became the first White Sox player to take three walks in his team debut since John Kruk in 1995.

Dallas Keuchel: 5 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO

Dallas Keuchel struggled with his command throughout the afternoon, and ended up allowing 3 runs over 5 innings of work. The White Sox have yet to see a starting pitcher pitch more than 5.1 innings in a game this season.

Yasmani Grandal: 0-for-2, RBI, 3 BB

Just like Jake Lamb, Yasmani Grandal also took three walks today. One of them came with the bases loaded, which provided the team’s first run of the game.

Zack Collins: 1-for-4, 1B, 2 RBI, 2 K

Zack Collins originally gave the White Sox the lead in the fifth inning with his two-run single with the bases loaded. With the hit, Collins raised his average to .250 on the young season and has an OPS of .794.

Matchup of the Game

Jose Marmolejos led off the bottom of the 6th inning with a walk against Dallas Keuchel. If this feels like an interesting choice for today’s matchup of the game, it is because the “dreaded leadoff walk” was especially dreadful today. It spearheaded Seattle’s seven-run outburst. While this walk in particular only lowered the White Sox win percentage from 85% to 80%, it clearly sparked what was the beginning of the end for the White Sox.

Players of the Game

With two perfect innings out of the bullpen, Aaron Bummer and Liam Hendriks are most deserving of co-player of the game honors.

Next Game

The White Sox will play their first home game tomorrow as they open a three-game series with the Royals. There is some rain in the forecast, which as of now is projected to clear up before the game, but if it does not, the teams have a scheduled off day on Friday which would be used to play the game. The first pitch will be at 3:10 PM CDT, and the projected starters are Lance Lynn and Brad Keller.
