Earlier today, Major League Baseball announced that Chicago White Sox right-handed pitcher Johnny Cueto has been named the American League Player of the Week for the week spanning August 15th through August 21st. Cueto has been spectacular for the White Sox all year, posting a 2.58 ERA in 118.2 innings pitched after being signed to a minor league contract after the season began.

Cueto’s last week, however, was particularly brilliant. In two starts against first place teams in the Houston Astros and Cleveland Guardians, Cueto pitched 16.2 innings and allowed only one earned run, leading the White Sox to two crucial wins late in the season.

Cueto’s next start following his dominant week and well-deserved award should come on Friday night in Chicago against the Diamondbacks.
