Yoan Moncada exits WBC game early with bruised rib

by Jordan Lazowski

Editor’s Note: This article was updated after a new report from Bob Nightengale came out stating that Yoan Moncada did NOT sustain a concussion during this collision.

White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada left today’s World Baseball Classic semifinal game early after colliding with outfielder Roel Santos on a pop-up from Kyle Schwarber.

It has since been announced that Moncada left the game with a bruised rib and is considered day-to-day.

Prior to exiting the game, Moncada went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored in the game, and in fact, Moncada was a huge part of Team Cuba’s trip to the World Baseball Classic semifinals, hitting .435 across the entire tournament.

The speed with which an update was given on Moncada was a positive sign. However, since Team USA defeated Cuba 14-2 in the semifinals, we should expect a quick update from the White Sox on Moncada’s status in the coming days. This will also lead to the return of Luis Robert Jr. to the ballclub, who didn’t have nearly as successful of a tournament as Moncada.

Should the White Sox provide any further information, we will continue to give updates.
