White Sox Update: James McCann agrees to one-year deal

by Joe Binder

We hope you all had a great Thanksgiving last week! Here’s the latest from this first Monday of December…

James McCann agrees to one-year deal with the White Sox

McCann Mania will be sticking around on 35th for another season! James McCann and the White Sox have agreed to a one-year, $5.4 million contract, avoiding arbitration.

This move comes after McCann put together a career-year, slashing .273/.328/.460 with 18 home runs and 60 RBI in 118 games. He was named to the American League All-Star team for the first time in his career, and the first catcher to represent the South Side since A.J. Pierzynski in 2006. He will be sharing duties behind the plate with Yasmani Grandal, who came over via free agency last month on a four-year deal.

Our Jordan Lazowski, who predicted a huge 2019, is fired up about the resigning and will have an article out on Tuesday to get you all hyped for another season with the McCannon. Stay tuned!

White Sox announce four roster moves

Following the James McCann signing, the White Sox announced four roster moves. They decline to tender 2020 contracts to right-handed pitcher Ryan Burr, left-handed pitcher Caleb Frare, and infielder Yolmer Sanchez. They also released right-handed pitcher Thyago Vieira, who we mentioned later.

The remaining unsigned players on the 40-man roster were tendered contracts for the 2020 season as the 40-man roster has decreased to 36.

Eloy Jimenez debuts in the Dominican Winter League

Outfielder Eloy Jimenez began his Dominican Winter League stint with the Gigantes del Cibao over the weekend. He has played in two games, collecting a single and run scored over eight at-bats. Jimenez has played winter ball previously, usually spending a few weeks with the team during December.

Thyago Vieira opts to play overseas

Ex-White Sox reliever Thyago Vieira will not be returning next season. He has agreed to terms with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan, per Mark Feinsand.

This move will not be a huge loss for the White Sox. Vieira struggled mightily during any Major League action he saw over the past two seasons. In 2019, he finished with a -0.2 WAR after throwing just 7.0 innings, accumulating a 9.00 ERA and 2.286 WHIP along the way.

Omar Vizquel lands managerial position after parting ways with the White Sox

Former White Sox player and minor league manager Omar Vizquel has found a new gig. He will become the next manager of the Toros de Tijuana. The team is a member of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.

The White Sox opted to part ways with Vizquel last month in a move that was seen surprising by some.
