White Sox Speed Pitch Challenge coming to Lot B on Wednesday, March 31st

by Joe Binder

The White Sox announced yesterday in a press release that the third annual Speed Pitch Challenge, presented by Beggars Pizza, will be happening on Wednesday, March 31st. While normally done out in the Guaranteed Rate bullpens, the team said the contest will be physically distanced this year and held in our beloved Lot B instead.

The organization says 100 lucky fans will be chosen at random to compete for a grand prize that includes a Lucas Giolito autographed jersey and a year’s worth of 16-inch family size Beggars pizzas. There will also be some other prizes like autographed baseballs from Michael Kopech, Tim Anderson, and Yoan Moncada as well as free pizzas of varying sizes.

In an effort to follow health and safety protocols, those taking part will be given specific timeslots and must adhere to the necessary safety guidelines – social distancing, wearing a face mask, etc. Each competitor will get to throw two pitches in front of a radar gun with the highest pitch velocity taking home the goods. Last year’s winner, Tom Higgins of Darien, Illinois, managed to top out at 84-mph so we’ll see if anyone can challenge him. Some warmer weather might help.
