White Sox place Mike Clevinger on 15-day injured list

by Joe Binder

The White Sox made an expected roster move prior to tonight’s game.

Right-handed pitcher Mike Clevinger was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to June 15) with right biceps inflammation, the team announced. As part of the corresponding move, right-hander Jesse Scholtens was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte.

Clevinger’s injury came as he was just one pitch away from working out of a first-and-third, no-out jam in the fifth inning of Wednesday night’s game. After inducing pop-ups from Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, Clevinger was 0-2 on J.D. Martinez before throwing a 95 mph fastball that Martinez fouled off. Immediately after the pitch, Clevinger shook his arm around and was clearly in a lot of pain. He would not throw any warm-up pitches before leaving the game.

Clevinger has previously had Tommy John surgery in his career, and earlier this year, he went on the Injured List with a wrist injury that occurred from throwing a different type of slider. On the season, Clevinger had been throwing pretty well recently. He lowered his ERA to 3.88 and has gone 3-4 with 53 strikeouts in 62.2 innings.

Luckily, the right-hander doesn’t appear to need Tommy John surgery this time around as he was optimistic when talking to media prior to Thursday night’s game in Los Angeles. That being said, there’s no timetable given for his return.

“I guess the best news possible. There’s no structural damage. Shoulder, elbow looks good. Just some fluid in the bicep. It’s day by day right now.”

As for Scholtens, the 29-year-old has appeared in five games (one start) over two stints with the White Sox this season, going 0-2 with a 3.24 ERA (6 ER/16.2 IP), .207 (12-58) opponents average and nine strikeouts. He has worked at least 3.0 IP in four of his five appearances with the Sox, including 4.0-plus IP three times.

Scholtens is 2-2 with a 4.44 ERA (23 ER/46.2 IP) and 45 strikeouts in nine starts with Charlotte this season.
