White Sox place Eloy Jimenez on injured list, recall Carlos Perez

by Joe Binder

Prior to today’s series finale vs. Cincinnati, the White Sox announced a pair of roster moves.

Designated hitter Eloy Jimenez has been placed on the 10-day injured list after undergoing an appendectomy at a Cincinnati-area hospital on Saturday night. As a result, the team has opted to recall catcher Carlos Perez from Triple-A Charlotte.

Jimenez began experiencing discomfort on Friday night, according to manager Pedro Grifol. He was sent to the Cincinnati-area hospital on Saturday for further evaluation after the pain intensified overnight. Following the successful procedure, the team estimates his recovery to take 4-6 weeks.

The 26-year-old has been on a tear at the plate lately. Over his last seven games, he’s hitting .464/.516/.714 (13-for-28) with two homers, 8 RBI, and 6 runs scored. His presence in the lineup has been huge as the offense has begun to turn things around over the past week.

As for Perez, the Triple-A catcher returns for his second MLB stint after appearing in seven games last season. He is currently batting .272/.321/.553 (28-for-103) with eight homers and 18 RBI in 27 games so far with Charlotte, making him a somewhat intriguing addition to the lineup.

More notably, the decision to recall Perez signals the transition of Yasmani Grandal to the designated hitter role during Jimenez’s absence. We’ll see if Grifol sheds further light on the plan moving forward during his pre- or post-game comments later today.
