White Sox acquire Pitcher Mike Mayers from Royals

by Thatcher Zalewski

The White Sox are starting the trade season early as the draft wraps up. Today, it was announced that the club acquired right-handed pitcher Mike Mayers from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for cash considerations.

The corresponding roster move that will bring Mayers onto the roster has yet to be announced.

This likely isn’t the start to the White Sox buying at the deadline – more likely, the White Sox are going to need players to eat up innings throughout the rest of the season once the team sells off many of its players. With Lucas Giolito, Lance Lynn, and even Mike Clevinger possibly getting traded by the end of the month, someone is going to have to pitch for the White Sox. That’s where Mayers comes in.

Mayers, 31, is in his eighth big league season – four years with the Cardinals, three years with the Angels, and only six games so far with the Royals. Mayers currently owns a 6.15 ERA this year in 26.1 innings pitched. The right-hander has only started two games for the Royals, but can provide depth in a rotation that may look a lot different come August 1st.

Mayers has a career ERA of 5.21 in 204 games with eight games started. Mayers is another right-handed arm who will almost certainly see time in both the bullpen and the rotation.

In short, it’s a move for the White Sox that goes a step further in confirming the rumors that they are looking to be sellers at this year’s deadline.
