The White Sox have reportedly acquired minor-league infielder Kean Wong from the Mariners. The news was first reported by Mike Curto, broadcaster for Seattle’s Triple-A affiliate, and has since been made official on Wong’s MiLB.com player page.
Wong, 28, originally signed a minor league deal with the Mariners this past offseason. After joining his brother, Kolten, within the organization, Kean has gone on to appear in 33 games for Triple-A Tacoma this season. The infielder is hitting .315/.422/.500 (29-for-92) with four home runs and a .922 OPS. Though a smaller sample size, Wong has seen improvement over his 2022 numbers where he hit .262/.342/.322 with three homers, 53 RBI, and 41 stolen bases for the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate.
Despite putting up decent stats in the minors, Wong’s success hasn’t carried over at the major league level. The Hawaii native is hitting a mere .167/.188/.218 (13-for-78) with six RBI and five runs scored over 39 games at the highest level. His last big league appearance came for the Angels in 2021.
Wong has not been placed on the 40-man roster, so he’ll be used primarily as depth in Triple-A Charlotte. This move is particularly important after the White Sox promoted infielder Zach Remillard following Yoan Moncada’s placement on the injured list.
