WGN Radio’s Andy Masur honors late White Sox broadcaster Ed Farmer with home run call

by Joe Binder

Well before the 2020 season got underway, the White Sox lost a key member of their family in long-time broadcaster Ed Farmer. Players, co-workers, fans, and so many others were left hurting as the iconic voice and even better person so many of us knew was suddenly gone. However, a piece of Ed remained in the team’s 2020 opener thanks to the man who has assumed his role, Andy Masur.

In his first official game as the new play-by-play voice of the White Sox, Masur honored “Farmio” in the most appropriate and touching way possible. After Moncada belted his three-run homer in the second inning, the veteran sportscaster recreated Farmer’s trademark call by belting out a “turn on the fireworks” and “light it up!”

Listen for yourselves:

The White Sox honored Farmer with a special tribute before Friday’s game. The team will also be wearing commemorative patches on their right sleeves throughout the season with “Farmio” etched inside.

While radio broadcasts will never sound the same, we’ll always remember the voice so many of us grew up listening to. Kudos to Andy for such an amazing and classy gesture!
