Royals 4, White Sox 3: Chicago loses series on walk-off bunt

by Sox On 35th Contributors

The Chicago White Sox suffered a series loss to the Kansas City Royals following a 4-3 defeat on Thursday. The Royals got the scoring started early, as White Sox starter Mike Clevinger allowed a solo home run in the second inning and two more runs in the fourth. Ultimately, Clevinger had a fine start, allowing just three hits and three earned runs in six innings while both striking out and walking a pair. He was followed by Gregory Santos and Joe Kelly, who each did not allow a run to score. Reynaldo Lopez, who is off to a slow start in 2023, allowed the walk-off run to score via a bunt in the bottom of the ninth.

As the final score indicates, the White Sox did not have a terrific day on the offensive side of the ball. Andrew Benintendi, Andrew Vaughn, and Luis Robert Jr. contributed to the White Sox scoring runs, but did not have a lot of support from the rest of the lineup. Yasmani Grandal did go 2-for-2 with a double in the game, but had to leave in the fourth inning with hamstring tightness. The White Sox are now 13-26 on the season.

W: Scott Barlow (1-2) | L: Reynaldo Lopez (0-3)

Notable Performances

Luis Robert Jr.: 1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI

The White Sox center fielder only had one hit in the game, but it was a meaningful one as he doubled late in the game to bring in two and tie things up.

Andrew Vaughn: 2-for-3, BB, RBI, R

Not only did Vaughn bring in the first White Sox run of the game, but he helped keep the rally alive in the eighth inning that led to Robert Jr. hitting his two-run double.

Next Matchup

The White Sox begin a three-game home series against the Houston Astros on Friday. The game is expected to begin at 7:10 PM CT, but there is rain in the forecast. Michael Kopech will get the start for the Pale Hose against J.P. France. The series will mark Jose Abreu‘s return to Chicago.

It would not surprise me to see the Sox enter June without having won 20 games!
