Reds 5, White Sox 3: Two homers not enough in loss

by Jordan Lazowski

After splitting the first two games on the road in Cincinnati, the White Sox now find themselves needing to win tomorrow’s game to win their second consecutive series.

The game started off strong for the White Sox, who scored in three consecutive innings (second through fourth), using the home run power (Hanser Alberto and Seby Zavala) as a big part of the offense. However, after taking a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth, starter Mike Clevinger would give three runs back – which would turn out to be the difference in this ballgame. TJ Friedl was the Red who made his presence known tonight, driving in the Reds’ last four runs of the ballgame (three-run homer, RBI triple) to put the Reds ahead for good.

As previously mentioned, Mike Clevinger got the start for the White Sox, completing six innings of four-run ball – not great, but good enough from a fifth starter in the rotation. He was followed by Gregory Santos and Alex Colome, neither of whom was incredibly effective, though Santos was the only one to give up a run.

The White Sox also announced they will be without Eloy Jimenez for 4-6 weeks due to appendicitis. Expect a roster move in the coming days to account for this.

With the loss, the White Sox fall to 11-23, and their season hopes continue to wither away with every passing loss. Tomorrow’s game certainly is important – to put it lightly.

W: Derek Law (2-4) | L: Mike Clevinger (2-3) | S: Alexis Diaz (6)

Notable Performances

Mike Clevinger: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 K

Clevinger certainly didn’t pitch well today, however, he gave the White Sox a chance as any fifth starter should. After a rougher outing, his ERA now rises to 4.84 on the season.

Luis Robert Jr: 2-for-2. 2B, R

Luis Robert Jr. continues to look better at the plate, raising his season average all the way up to .248 – it’s a long hill to climb, but it’s certainly a start.
