Postgame Report: White Sox 1, Yankees 2

by Jordan Lazowski

It was one of the better games this season with a playoff-like feel, but the White Sox came up on the losing side of things in today’s 2-1 tilt. Carlos Rodon had some of his best stuff of the season, striking out 13 hitters over six innings while giving up just two hits. However, Jordan Montgomery was just as good, and this pitchers’ duel was settled by the bullpen. After a triple play crushed the Sox’ chances in the top of the ninth, the Yankees strung three consecutive hits together off of Evan Marshall to win the game in the bottom of the ninth.

With the loss, the White Sox fall to 26-17.

W: Aroldis Chapman (3-0) | L: Evan Marshall (0-2)

Savant Leaders

Notable Performances

Carlos Rodon: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 13K

Rodon was absolutely dominant, and silenced any doubters surrounding the quality of opponent that led to his early-season success. Rodon was in control from the first pitch, keeping the Yankees’ hitters off balance with solid command of both his slider and change up that set up his fastball well. Rodon his as high as 99 mph on the radar gun, and the only unfortunate thing about his outing is that he had to be pulled at 95 pitches. Dominance from Rodon.

Nick Madrigal: 1-for-4, 1B, RBI

Nick Madrigal provided the only hit for the Sox with runners in scoring position, flipping a really good slider from Jonathan Loaisiga into RF for a game-tying RBI single.

Yoan Moncada/Yermin Mercedes (Combined): 4-for-7, BB

Outside of Madrigal, Mercedes and Moncada provided the rest of the offense for the team. Mercedes had a couple of singles, while Moncada added a single and a double. Nothing came of any of these hits, but it was nice to know that these two were seeing the ball well today.

Matchup of the Game

I think we all know what is coming here. The White Sox and Andrew Vaughn had Aroldis Chapman on the ropes – first and second, no outs in the top of the ninth. However, Andrew Vaughn hit one perfectly to Gio Urshela at third, and a couple throws later, the Yankees had a triple play, were out of the inning, and won the game in the next half inning. Tough break for the Sox with this one.

Next Game

The White Sox will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon with a quick 12:05 pm turnaround, as Dylan Cease will match up against Gerrit Cole in a tough matchup for the Sox. As always, this will be viewable on NBC Sports Chicago.

Its time to DFA Evan Marshall.

Marshall in the ninth instead of….anybody? Foolish. Perhaps you bring in Hendriks to ensure he starts an inning with nobody on base. Perhaps Heuer. Either would have been preferable to Marshall.

Just a galling loss.
