Luis Robert promoted to AA Birmingham

by Nik Gaur

After hitting .453/.512/.920 for Winston-Salem, the White Sox announced today that Luis Robert has been promoted to AA Birmingham. At 21 years of age, Robert’s otherworldly 1.432 OPS gave the organization no choice but to reward him with a promotion.

At AA, Robert will play half of his games at Regions Field, a notoriously pitcher-friendly park that has not been treating current Birmingham Barons hitters well so far. If Robert comes in and torches the league immediately like he did in the Carolina League, things become even more interesting for the White Sox, who, according to the Daily Herald’s Scot Gregor, have been discussing the possibility of bringing their top prospects up sooner rather than later in order to get their adjustment periods out of the way. I wrote about this possibility for Robert specifically in “The case for accelerating Luis Robert’s timeline”.

With the Barons having an off-day today, White Sox fans will have to anxiously await Robert’s AA debut on Wednesday night. While it may be unrealistic to expect him to dominate the league right away, his incredible production in Winston-Salem is a reminder that he is capable of surpassing any expectations, even in a league and ballpark where hitters are naturally disadvantaged.
