Lucas Giolito tosses in team’s first simulated game

by Joe Binder

The White Sox held their first simulated game this afternoon with Lucas Giolito facing nearly a dozen batters over three innings. While unfortunately the team doesn’t broadcast their workouts like other clubs across the league, the media was in attendance so we have an idea of how things unfolded.

Below is a play-by-play breakdown based on what was tweeted. Keep in mind, this was only a simulated game so it didn’t have any formal structure to it. I’m just going to split things up by whole innings for the sake of this article.

First Inning

The defense behind Giolito lined up like this: Yasmani Grandal (C), Edwin Encarnacion (1B), Nick Madrigal (2B), Andrew Romine (SS), Andrew Vaughn (3B), Nicky Delmonico (LF), Adam Engel (CF), and Luis Basabe (RF).

  • Tim Anderson (1): Strikes out swinging on an outside, offspeed pitch.
  • Luis Robert (2): Strikes out looking on a called third strike by Yasmani Grandal. There were no official umpires, in case you were wondering.
  • Jose Abreu (3): Flies out.
  • James McCann (4): Doubles down the left field line for the first hit of summer camp. All-star on all-star crime with Tim Anderson cheering from the dugout.

Second Inning

Both sides switched so the new defense behind Giolito looked like this: Jose Abreu (1B), Leury Garcia (2B), Tim Anderson (SS), Danny Mendick (3B), Eloy Jimenez (LF), Luis Robert (CF), and Nomar Mazara (RF). Looks an awful lot like the Opening Day set up if you ask me.

  • Adam Engel (5): Walks and steals second base.
  • Yasmani Grandal (6): Walks to put runners on first and second with no outs.
  • Edwin Encarnacion (7): Flies out to Luis Robert in CF. Engel and Grandal hold at second and first respectively.
  • Nicky Delmonico (8): Singles up the middle to score Adam Engel from second base. Yasmani Grandal advances to second and the B squad (for the sake of this article) takes a 1-0.

I’m not 100% sure if this was all from the inning. There weren’t any other tweets that I could find before they switched out, so we’ll act like it was.

Third Inning

  • Nomar Mazara (9): Lines out to Nick Madrigal at second base. Short jokes ensued.
  • Eloy Jimenez (10): Strikes out swinging.
  • Zack Collins (11): Strikes out looking, according to Yasmani Grandal. That’s Giolito’s second looking, fourth overall.

From the looks of it, that concluded the action. The “B squad” takes it 1-0 for a White Sox winner.

According to Ricky Renteria, tomorrow’s simulated action will be for four innings. Keep an eye out for our “White Sox Update” article here at SoxOn35th.com later this evening with more from the today’s Summer Camp!
