White Sox designated hitter Eloy Jimenez hospitalized with abdominal pain

by Joe Binder

UPDATE: Eloy Jimenez will miss 4-6 weeks after undergoing an emergency appendectomy.

White Sox designated hitter Eloy Jimenez has been hospitalized with abdominal pain, according to manager Pedro Grifol.

Jimenez began experiencing discomfort on Friday night and was sent to a Cincinnati-area hospital earlier today for further evaluation after the pain intensified overnight. Grifol says the team hopes to have another update before Saturday night’s game begins.

Jimenez, 26, has been on a tear at the plate lately. Over his last seven games, he’s hitting .464/.516/.714 (13-for-28) with two homers, 8 RBI, and 6 runs scored. His presence in the lineup has been huge as the offense has begun to turn things around over the past week.

For tonight’s game, Yasmani Grandal will serve as the team’s designated hitter and bat fourth with Seby Zavala taking over catching duties. Though there’s no timetable for Jimenez’s return, we can likely assume that he will be kept out of Sunday’s lineup as well.

We will continue to monitor the situation and see how this impacts the team in the upcoming week. For more updates, follow us on social media @SoxOn35th!
