White Sox release new-look schedule for 2023 season

by Noah Phalen

Major League Baseball released the 2023 schedule for all 30 teams on Wednesday morning, and it looks quite a bit different than what fans are used to.

As part of the new CBA, beginning in 2023, all 30 teams will play at least one series against each of the other 29 teams. This will be the first time since the league expanded to 30 teams that this will happen. In order to make this fit in the schedule, MLB has reduced the number of division games each team plays from 76 to 52. This means more intriguing matchups, more inter-league games, and less repetitiveness in the schedule.

Let’s take a look at some key matchups for the White Sox:

Opening Series: March 30 – April 2 @ Houston Astros

The White Sox will open the 2023 season with a four-game series in Houston in what’ll undoubtedly be an early challenge for them. The White Sox will have to win in a place that they’ve had trouble winning in recent years if they want to get 2023 started on a good note.

Home Opener: April 3 vs. San Francisco Giants

The Sox will return from Houston and open the home portion of their schedule on April 3 against the Giants in their first inter-league matchup of the year.

June 6-8 @ New York Yankees

The White Sox make their annual trip to the Little League ballpark in the Bronx in early June, another place that’s normally pretty tough on visiting teams. However, the Sox did win the series in New York in 2022, so they’ll hope for some similar luck in 2023.

June 13-15 @ Los Angeles Dodgers

The White Sox had the privilege of facing the Dodgers at home in 2022. No such luck in 2023, as they’ll head out to Dodger stadium in mid-June.

Crosstown Classic: July 25-26 vs. Cubs, August 15-16 @ Cubs

The Cubs remain the lone National League team that the Sox will play more than three games against, with the tradition of the Crosstown Classic remaining. The Sox will host the Cubs on the South Side in late July, and head up north for a couple games in mid-August.

Season Conclusion: September 25- October 1 vs. Diamondbacks and Padres

In a traditional season, Sox fans might expect some late-season division games to create some drama for the final week, however, in 2023 the White Sox will close out the regular season with six straight at home against NL West opponents.
