White Sox DH Yermin Mercedes captures first 2021 Player of the Week award

by Joe Binder

Following a scorching start to the season, White Sox designated hitter Yermin Mercedes took home the first American League Player of Week honors of 2021 for the period of April 1-4.

Despite not appearing in the Opening Day contest, Mercedes went 9-for-14 with two doubles, a home run, and six RBI over the final three games in Anaheim. His success at the plate resulted in an insane .636/.667/1.364 slash line, setting social media ablaze in the process.

Mercedes began the historic run in his first career start on Friday night, where he became the first player to hit 5-for-5 in his first career start. The 28-year-old stretched his streak out even further, logging eight consecutive hits (8-for-8) and becoming the first Major League player since at least 1900 to do so.

The weekly award marked the first for a White Sox player since teammate Lucas Giolito captured it last season after his no-hitter for the period ending on August 31st. While the series wasn’t necessarily a memorable one, Mercedes made the most of his opportunity that was 10 years in the making. Here’s to much more success in the future!
