White Sox activate Jake Burger, option Carlos Perez

by Jordan Lazowski

The White Sox are one step closer to full strength.

Prior to this afternoon’s matchup against the Houston Astros, the White Sox activated Jake Burger from the 10-Day Injured List and optioned catcher Carlos Perez to Triple-A Charlotte. Burger will DH in today’s game.

Burger sustained a strained oblique back on a May 3rd matchup during a fourth-inning at-bat. Burger remained optimistic that he would return immediately following the minimum 10-day stay on the injured list.

Burger’s return to the White Sox lineup will be a welcomed one. Through 23 games, he’s slashing .224/.312/.612 with seven homers, 14 RBI, and a .924 OPS. At the time of his injury, not only did he lead the team in bombs, but Burger was also tied for second in Major League Baseball with six of those coming at home, trailing only Minnesota’s Byron Buxton by one. Certainly, the White Sox will be happy to welcome his power bat back to the lineup.

Perez has been up and down with the White Sox a bit over the past few seasons. This season, he has appeared in three games, going 1-for-4 with a strikeout. His demotion represents the White Sox’ belief that Yasmani Grandal should be ready to go by Tuesday following some hamstring soreness he’s experienced over the past few days. Seby Zavala will catch Lucas Giolito in Sunday’s series finale, and the team will take advantage of their off day on Monday as well to get Grandal back to full health.
