White Sox 5, Royals 2: Lynn, Gonzalez lead first series sweep

by Jordan Lazowski

For the first time this season, the White Sox have swept a baseball team.

Lance Lynn got the White Sox started this afternoon and continued the club’s strong run of starting pitching efforts. He completed six innings of work, giving up only two runs – both of them coming on a Michael Massey home run. He turned it over to the bullpen to get the remaining nine outs, and Keynan Middleton, Aaron Bummer, and Joe Kelly continued the bullpen’s stretch of scoreless inning to 19.2 innings.

The White Sox offense was paced by nine-hitter Romy Gonzalez, who went 3-for-3 on the afternoon, including a two-run triple to put the White Sox ahead for good later in the game. Luis Robert Jr. got the scoring started with his team-leading 13th home run on the season as part of a scorching hot May. Andrew Benintendi also drove in two runs and extended his hitting streak to eight games on the afternoon. Overall, it was a strong afternoon for the White Sox on both sides of the ball.

One piece of news: Hanser Alberto left the game day-to-day with a shoulder injury sustained while signaling “safe” on a bunt in the bottom of the fifth. Pedro Grifol is optimistic that he can avoid an IL stint.

With the victory, the White Sox have swept the Royals for the first time since 2021. On the season, he is 19-29.

W: Lance Lynn (3-5) | L: Max Castillo (0-1) | S: Joe Kelly (1)
