White Sox 5, Reds 4: Clutch homers make the difference

by Joe Binder

After falling behind early, the White Sox rallied back to take the first of a three-game series against the Reds.

Down 3-0 in the fifth, Elvis Andrus opened Chicago’s scoring with a three-run shot to left field. It was his first homer of the year and just cleared the wall at 356 feet.

After the Reds regained the lead on a Jonathan India homer in the bottom half of the inning, Luis Robert Jr. responded in the sixth. He sent Hunter Greene’s 100 mph pitch deep into the centerfield seats to give the White Sox their first lead of the game, 5-4.

From there, Joe Kelly proved to be rock solid in his return from the Paternity List. He struck out three of the four batters he faced before handing the ball over to Reynaldo Lopez, who pitched a scoreless ninth.

With the win, the White Sox improve to 11-21, but still sit eight games out of first.

W: Lance Lynn (1-4, 6.86 ERA) | L: Hunter Greene (0-2, 3.74 ERA) | S: Reynaldo Lopez (4, 8.16) ERA)

Notable Performances

Joe Kelly: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Vintage Joe Kelly made an appearance fresh off his Paternity List stint. He faced four batters, striking out three, and needed only 13 pitches to do so. If this becomes a trend, watch out.

Luis Robert Jr. (CF): 3-for-4, HR (7), 2 RBI, R

Don’t let Luis Robert Jr. get hot. The center fielder turned in a multi-hit performance that was highlighted by his game-winning homer in the sixth. He’s now quietly hitting .300 (6-for-20) with two homers and 5 RBI over his last seven games. We’re not saying, we’re just saying.

Elvis Andrus (2B): 1-for-1, HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 BB, R

Elvis left the building for the first time this season and in a huge spot. His solid performance at the plate was key in tonight’s win.
