White Sox 11, Angels 5: Bats roar to life in victory

by Jordan Lazowski

Well, that was a much-needed offensive output.

The White Sox got the work done with their bats today, putting 11 runs on the board to go along with 17 hits on a night that was certainly overdue for the South Siders.

The game got started by – of course – Luis Robert Jr, who continued his attack on the league with his fifth home run in as many games, this one putting the White Sox ahead early 2-0 after a leadoff walk by Andrew Benintendi.

After the Angels scored two in the bottom of the first to tie the game, Eloy Jimenez continued his recent hot streak and gave the Sox a lead they would never give up with his 10th home run on the season. Andrew Vaughn would later go on to deliver the crucial bases-clearing double that put the White Sox well out of Angels’ striking distance.

From there, the night belonged to Lucas Giolito and Seby Zavala. Zavala launched two home runs over the course of the night, while Giolito completed seven strong innings, saving the White Sox bullpen while also keeping the Angels’ bats at bay in order to give the club a more comfortable win.

The Angels would threaten late in this one, but Kendall Graveman was able to induce an easy fly out with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth to give the White Sox a margin of victory greater than four for the first time in over 20 games.

With the victory, the White Sox improve to and sit 5.5 games back of first place.

W: Lucas Giolito (6-5) | L: Jaime Barria (2-3)

Notable Performances

Lucas Giolito: 7 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 9 K

Giolito gave up two late homers to make his line look worse than the way he pitched, but it was another stellar night for Gio. His seven innings also helped save a bullpen that doesn’t have an off day until Monday.

Seby Zavala: 3-for-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI

The battery mates certainly did their job tonight, as Zavala launched two towering home runs while also adding some crucial insurance in the ninth inning.

Robert, Jimenez, Vaughn: 7-for-15, 6 RBI, 4 R

The middle of the White Sox’s order certainly did its job tonight, as all three of these hitters had crucial run-scoring hits at different points in the game.
