Royals 3, White Sox 0: Flexen’s strong start negated by inept offense

by Patrick Hederman

The good news is that 67% of the hits today by the White Sox were extra base hits. The bad news is that they only were able to rack up three hits in total.

Chris Flexen looked sharp in his second outing of 2024. Flexen was very efficient, only throwing 77 pitches in 6.1 innings of work. Even in times where he seemed to be in a bit of a jam, he was able to help himself get out of trouble.

While Flexen was able to help himself get out of jams, the defense was not able to provide the same support. In the 7th inning, Dominic Fletcher leaped at the wall in attempt to make a catch and ended up knocking the ball over the fence, giving MJ Melendez a two-run home run on a ball that would have otherwise stayed in the ballpark.

Any chances for potential rallies tonight for the Sox were killed by double play balls by Fletcher and Grossman. The team has now hit into seven double plays through the first three games of this four-game series, all while only scoring two runs.

W: Michael Wacha (1-0) L: Chris Flexen (0-2) SV: Chris Stratton (1)

Pitching Recap:

Notable Performances

Chris Flexen: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4K

Flexen was strong and efficient today. He was cruising along until the 7th inning, until the Dominic Fletcher-assisted home run took the air out of his balloon. Flexen should win most games he starts with the stuff he had tonight, so it’s unfortunate to see him get stuck with the loss.

Flexen picks Velázquez off of second base to eliminate a scoring threat.

Paul DeJong: 1-3, 2B

After a shaky start to the game where he booted a ball that was generously scored as a hit instead of an error, DeJong seemed to settle down and had a good game defensively. He also provided the slightest of offensive sparks with a double in the 8th inning.
