Report: Reds have contacted White Sox about available starting pitchers

by Thatcher Zalewski

Another day, another trade rumor. First, it was the Dodgers, and now it’s the Reds.

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi put out another trade rumor today involving the White Sox. This time, it involves multiple members of the current White Sox’ starting rotation: Lucas Giolito, Dylan Cease, and Lance Lynn. According to Morosi, Lynn and Giolito are the two most likely to be dealt, while Cease’s availability is still unclear. However, the Reds have reportedly contacted the White Sox about all three.

Morosi didn’t outright state that the Reds were interested in both Lance Lynn and Lucas Giolito, however, he mentioned that the Reds did contact the White Sox regarding the availability of their starting pitchers.

Lynn, 36, is currently on his last guaranteed year with the White Sox as he does have a club option at the end of the year. The right-hander has struggled this year, posting a 6.03 ERA in 18 starts. In Lynn’s last start, he did go seven shut-out innings of one-hit baseball while also striking out seven against the St. Louis Cardinals. Overall, he has definitely seen improvements in recent weeks, and some advanced metrics hint towards a turnaround of sorts for Lynn – maybe not back to his best days, but to better ones.

In an earlier report from Bob Nightengale, he mentioned that opposing teams believe that Lynn would be a different pitcher on a better team. If the Reds were to acquire Lynn, he could provide a veteran presence in a young Reds rotation.

Morosi also mentioned Giolito’s name as an available option. Giolito will continue to be a popular name amongst trade talks at this year’s deadline. Morosi also said that no trade is close at this point.
