Report: Dodgers showing interest in Lucas Giolito

by Thatcher Zalewski

Let the trade rumors begin!

Jon Morosi from MLB Network dropped a trade rumor this afternoon that the Los Angeles Dodgers are interested in White Sox starter Lucas Giolito. He also mentioned in the tweet that Giolito is one of the top available starters, which should come as no surprise with Giolito’s contract expiring at the end of this year.

One thing to note here, outside of the rumor, is how Morosi mentions the Dodgers having nine of the MLB’s top 100 prospects. This could mean that the Dodgers are willing to part ways with one of their top prospects to acquire Giolito.

Given historical trends, it’s likely that the best player the White Sox would receive would be at the back end of any top-100 prospect list. So, players such as Ryan Pepiot, Nick Frasso, and Nick Nastrini are most likely to be part of the conversation here. Remember, at the end of the day, teams are only trading for eight starts of Lucas Giolito.

The White Sox do have leverage here with this move, as they can hold out until August 1st to receive the best offer they possibly can in a market with few starting pitchers. Netting back a top-100 prospect for Giolito would help the White Sox turn things back around and kickstart a retool.

On the season, Giolito is 6-5 with a 3.45 ERA in 112.1 innings. The 28-year-old has firmly put his brutal 2022 behind him as an outlier and has been the White Sox’ most consistent starting pitcher this season.

This won’t be the last we hear of Giolito’s name in potential trade talks before August 1st, as starting pitching is always in high demand at the trade deadline, so make sure to follow along with all the news that comes out over the next few weeks.

If the White Sox could get a top prospect(s) from the Dodgers for Giolito, both teams win! Of course, does the White Sox Front Office think that way? And would Reinsdork insert himself into the process a la Tony La Russa?
